REVIEW: Before We Leave on PC (Steam)

"Before We Leave is a non-violent city building game set in a cozy corner of the universe." Well, that is what the official blurb says, so let's go with that.

As with all city builders, your job is to create a society, and help it grow, and expand. Your people are known as "Peeps", and they have spent generations underground, so their civilisation is lost, you will slowly help them grow, expand the settlements, discover new as well as lost ancient technologies and eventually even leave the planet and colonise new and wonderful places.

Everything is very laid back, the mechanics of the game are very simple, the planet your play on is based on hexagonal tiles, each tile represents an area you can build on. You start off with everything very basic, and as you go along, you will find that you can research new ways to do things, everything from the way you build roads, to the buildings and so on.

One of the things that makes Before We Leave stand out, is the look of the game, as I said you play on the whole planet which has kind of been shrunk down, you will start on small islands, create shipping routes to other islands, and eventually leave the planet and go to the next.

Ahead of the Curve - Poster and Release Details

Together Films has announced that they will be releasing Jen Rainin and Rivkah Beth Medow's documentary AHEAD OF THE CURVE, in UK & Ireland cinemas and on-demand on the 4th June 2021.

Featuring interviews with Melissa Etheridge (Academy Award Winner, Best Original Song An Inconvenient Truth), Lea DeLaria (Orange Is The New Black), Jewelle Gomez (The Gilda Stories), this documentary is about the best-selling lesbian magazine ever published, Curve and it's formidable creator, Franco Stevens, one of the most influential women in lesbian history.

Ahead of the Curve tracks the power of lesbian visibility and community from the early '90s to the present day through the story of Franco's founding of Curve magazine. Decades later, in the wake of a disabling injury, Franco learns that Curve will fold within the year and questions the relevance of the magazine in the face of accelerating threats to LGBTQ+ community. To forge a path forward, Franco reaches out to women working in today's queer spaces to understand what queer women need today and how Curve can continue to serve the community.

"Ahead of the Curve tells the behind-the-scenes and out in the community story of Franco creating and growing Curve magazine. Much more than a ground-breaking publication, Curve became a lifeline for the lesbian community in the 1990s. The film draws a through line to the queer BIPOC leaders doing this work today. However, like many inspirational LGBTQ+ icons and pioneers, especially women, trans and non-binary people, Franco's story remains largely unknown. Releasing for Pride month will bring her story to a national viewing audience, increasing awareness of Franco's legacy and encouraging conversations about the value of preserving and uplifting LGBTQ+ histories today," says Director Jen Rainin.

Dr Bird's Advice for Sad Poets - Official Trailer

Enter the whimsical world of James Whitman (Lucas Jade Zumann), a 16-year-old boy obsessed with poet Walt Whitman, who's reeling from the disappearance of his beloved sister Jorie (Lily Donoghue – Dirty John, Black Christmas) and struggling with anxiety and depression. But his dysfunctional parents:  abusive father (Jason Isaacs) and careworn mother (Lisa Edelstein)  refuse to confront the issues so there's no one else to turn to except Dr Bird (voiced by Tom Wilkinson – The Grand Budapest Hotel, The Full Monty) a talking pigeon-cum-therapist.

Based on Evan Roskos's best-selling novel, (https://amzn.to/3vEFIzp) Dr. Bird's Advice For Sad Poets is a dream-like, fantasy drama that follows the trials and tribulations of James as he embarks on a mission to find his sister, win the affections of Sophie (Taylor Russell), a girl at school who joins him on his quest…but her ex- boyfriend Martin (Chase Stokes), could be a problem, as could the strange cult-like guru Xavier (David Arquette), who seems to know more than he's letting on.

The sometimes wild, sometimes hilarious, emotional and visually stunning quest takes the lovestruck teens into a magical realism-inspired world, and – via a strange cult – into the seedy underbelly of New York City's nightlife, where they encounter weird and wonderful parties and surreal situations. Their journey is interspersed with dream-like sequences, theatrical interludes, stunning dance scenes, talking paintings and more, that see James start to question everything he knows and makes him more determined than ever to get the help he needs for his mental health.

With stunning score from Jim Dooley (A Series of Unfortunate Events) and directed by Yaniv Raz in his feature debut, Dr. Bird's Advice For Sad Poets is fantastically fun and just what the doctor ordered; a little bird told us.

REVIEW: OVIVO on Xbox

OVIVO is one truly unique game. First of all everything is in black and white. You play as "OVO" a small round ball. And you have the ability to switch from black to white and back again. Your controls are left and right, and then a button to switch from black to white.

As you move about, you use gravity by switching between the colours as a way to propel yourself through the level, collecting icons and symbols.

There are no instructions. No text, no real menus. You just have to figure it out for yourself, and somehow that works perfectly.

ITV commissions new entertainment series Cooking With The Stars

ITV, has commissioned South Shore to deliver a six-part brand-new entertainment cooking competition called Cooking With The Stars. The series, transmitting this summer on ITV and the ITV Hub, will feature eight celebrities, each paired with an accomplished chef who will mentor, teach and take them from passionate amateur to restaurant level chefs.

TV Presenter Emma Willis and comedian Tom Allen are set to host the series where the celebrities will be cooking up a storm week by week in a bid to outdo their rivals.

Trained by their professional chef partner they'll prepare and present their dishes for judgement. Their mentor chefs then become judges, rating the other celebrity cooks, with the bottom two at risk of leaving the competition. Should they end up in the bottom two the celebrities will be fighting for their place in the contest on their own, with no help from their teacher, as they each present a dish in the hope of saving their spot. This eliminator round is decided by a blind testing from the chefs – unaware of whose food they're passing judgement over the greatest supporter could swiftly and unwittingly become the worst critic and vote for their protégé to leave the competition.

Emma Willis said: "I absolutely love cooking so I can't wait to see the celebrities in the kitchen showing what they have or haven't learnt. What a brilliant opportunity to be trained by some of the best chefs in the business and I'm hoping I can pick up a few tips too. I know it's going to be a lot of fun hosting with the brilliant Tom Allen so I can't wait to get started."

Tom Allen said: "I'm absolutely delighted to be working with Emma and an amazing team of chefs and celebrities. I have a feeling everyone's going to be put through their paces but we're going to have a lot of fun along the way!"

Channel 4 commissions animated Christmas special based on Terry Pratchett’s The Abominable Snow Baby from Eagle Eye Drama

Channel 4 has commissioned Terry Pratchett's The Abominable Snow Baby for December 2021. Produced by Eagle Eye Drama, the production company recently launched by the team behind global drama brand Walter Presents, in association with Narrativia, Sir Terry's independent production company, the animated Christmas special is based on a short story from his bestselling book of Christmas tales (Father Christmas' Fake Beard).

The magic of Terry Pratchett, the legendary national treasure and maverick British author who sold over 100 million books worldwide, comes to life in this half-hour programme. The Abominable Snow Baby tells the story of a quintessentially English town which is thrown into disarray by a huge snowfall and the dramatic appearance of a 14-foot tall Abominable Snow Baby.

Shunned and feared by the local townsfolk, Snow Baby is rescued by the indomitable Granny who along with grandson Albert, welcomes him into her home, showering her new pet with love and affection, changing the town's perception and helping the community overcome their initial prejudices.

Commissioned by Channel 4 Head of Drama Caroline Hollick and Commissioning Editor Gwawr Lloyd, the programme is supported by a grant from the BFI's Young Audiences Content Fund, and will be directed by Massimo Fenati and Executive Produced by Tess Cuming, with Eagle Eye Drama's Jo McGrath and Walter Iuzzolino overseeing the project as joint Creative Directors and with Rob Wilkins as Executive Producer for Narrativia.

Created with traditional hand-drawn animation techniques to capture the timeless nature of Terry Pratchett's story, The Abominable Snow Baby is part of a long and established tradition of Channel 4's animated Christmas specials such as The Snowman, The Tiger Who Came to Tea, and last year's Quentin Blake's Clown.

Rob Wilkins, Managing Director of Narrativia and Manager of Sir Terry Pratchett's Estate said:
In his lifetime, Terry wrote over seventy books, which have been translated into 41 languages. He started his career as a writer of short stories for young people, who remained his favourite audience. The Abominable Snow Baby showcases Terry's firmly held belief in not judging people on appearances, his reverence for the elderly, and his very genuine love of Christmas. Narrativia is delighted to see Terry's work brought to life by the talented team at Eagle Eye Drama, in the fiftieth year of Terry Pratchett being a published author.

REVIEW: Death Ray Manta SE on Nintendo Switch

Death Ray Manta SE is a twin stick shooter, you play as a Manta with Death Rays! You blew up your house and now you live in fish space! Yep, it is that old cliche!

This is what you call a truly fast paced shooter, (think geometry wars, but with neon graphics) the level starts, and within moments the level is filled with enemies, shoot them with your laser beams, collect gems for bonus points and try not to die. Pretty simple.

There are 32 levels, and it is non-stop. Clear a level, a new level starts, rinse and repeat.
The left stick controls the mantra, the right stick controls the firing.
