Interview with Award Winning Author Elizabeth Massie

When did you first become interested in writing?

I've been a storyteller ever since I can remember. When I was a little girl, I was constantly entertaining (I use that term lightly; who knows how entertained they really were?) my family with made up "what if" tales. At night I might ask my mother, "What if when we're sleeping a ghost comes down the chimney?" Or in the car with my dad, when we would stop to fill the tank with gasoline, I might say, "See that cute little stray dog over there? What if I opened the car door and he got in with us and wouldn't get out?" Of course, then I'd launch off that question and explain all the things that might happen based on my scenario.

My parents were very patient and encouraging, though. In fact, my dad, the president of our hometown newspaper, had a lot to do with sealing my desire to be a writer. One evening, when I was four, I made up and shared a story about a squirrel who had lost her favorite acorn. When I went to bed, my father drove down to the newspaper office, typed up (yes, this was in the day of typewriters!) my story as best he could remember, found clip art of squirrels in one of the big advertising books, and hand-bound it into a booklet with a really cute cover. The next morning, he gave it to me. I was thrilled that I could now read and re-read (I was reading by the time I was four) my story, and share it with others. I'm sure my parents' eyes glazed over with my twentieth reading, but I didn't notice at the time.

How did you get involved in fantasy/horror?

I watched the original The Twilight Zone and original The Outer Limits on television as a kid. Scared me to death, but I couldn't get enough. I think the reason is this…the characters were, for the most part, people I could care about. These characters faced frightening and often overwhelming situations…sometimes they made it out okay, other times they didn't. And so, early on, it impressed on me the fact that horror, done well, could create and encourage sympathy and empathy. I really liked that. Also, these two shows tackled social issues that were often ignored during that time period. That was another big plus for me, another aspect of horror that steered me in its direction.

Jemaine Clement and Taika Waititi’s Wellington Paranormal lands on Sky Comedy and NOW TV this April

Cult mockumentary comedy from Grammy and Emmy award-winning Jemaine Clement and Oscar-winning Taika Waititi, Wellington Paranormal will be available this Spring on Sky. With all episodes of S1-S3 Wellington Paranormal available as a boxset from Monday 5 April 9pm on Sky Comedy and NOW TV.

There are some crimes normal cops can't investigate… Officers Minogue and O'Leary are invited to join the new Wellington Paranormal Unit of the Police when they unwittingly bring in a young woman possessed by the demon Bazu'aal; a demon who can jump from body to body and who is literally hell-bent on opening a portal to Hades in Cuba Street's iconic Bucket Fountain. With the help of their Senior Sergeant Ruawai Maaka, they succeed in banishing the demon thanks to some quick googling and so the Wellington Paranormal Unit is born.

For the rest of the series, our hapless duo investigate an alien invasion on a farm; meet a werewolf out for revenge on her ex; resolve a noise complaint at a haunted house full of ghosts from the 1970s; encounter the vampire Nick from What We Do In The Shadows stealing blood from the hospital, along the way investigating a ghost behind a dairy, a scary ritual in a park, some creepy clowns by the road and a couple of dreary goths in a cemetery; then in the exciting conclusion to the series, Minogue and O'Leary race to stop a pair of zombified cops from their station before they get to Courtenay Place on a Friday night and cause a zombie apocalypse! All in a series' work for our dynamic duo and their brave sergeant.

Wellington Paranormal looks like a typical police reality show in the style of Motorway Patrol or Police Ten7 but with X-Files-style paranormal events as the 'crimes' being investigated. The performances are realistic but funny using a cast of great comedic improvisers with scripts by exciting new writing talent.

The series was directed, produced and script edited by comedy legend Jemaine Clement with the help of director Jackie Van Beek and executive produced by Taika Waititi.

REVIEW: In Rays of the Light on Xbox One

In Rays of the Light is the latest release from Sergey Noskov. A "first person meditative quest" game, whatever that means.

You start of the game in an abandoned Russian school/university. You have no idea who you are, nor do you seemingly know what to do, or where to go.

Within the first few minutes, you will figure out the general mechanics of the game, you will find a flash light, a pipe and keys. Flash light to see in the dark, pipe to open boarded up doors, and keys to erm... open locks. From this point on, you can basically go anywhere in the game, still no real instruction of what you are supposed to do, or where to go. And this is why I would assume the game is called a "first person meditative quest".

Channel 4 and Davina McCall to break the menopause taboo

Channel 4 is to challenge our reluctance to talk about the menopause in Davina McCall: Sex, Myths and The Menopause. With startling honesty, Davina McCall will describe her own menopause journey, busting the myths surrounding the transition, and dispelling the shame and fear around hormone replacement therapy.

A 1x60 commission from Finestripe Productions, the film will investigate the science that adds to our understanding of the menopause and its impact on women's health.  In the film Davina will fearlessly tackle the midlife taboo that can destroy women's jobs and relationships, and will look at the lack of understanding and misinformation that still exists around the menopause.

Underpinned with the personal stories of women from a variety of backgrounds who have lived through everything the menopause has thrown at them, the film will spark a candid conversation about a subject that has for too long been a taboo.

Davina McCall, presenter said: "I don't think I've ever worked on a project that has affected me so deeply. I get home after filming and sometimes I just sit down and cry ... from deep frustration and anger at how we are failing women. This film isn't just for menopausal women, it's for their partners, their fathers, their brothers, and their sons. We're all in this together. I used to think that menopause was an age thing and now I realise it's a woman thing. For far too long, there's been a shroud of embarrassment, shame and fear around this topic, and this is where it stops!"

Interview with Kyle Rankin, Director of RUN HIDE FIGHT

Ahead of FrightFest's UK premiere of RUN HIDE FIGHT at the Glasgow Film Festival, director Kyle Rankin talks about the personal tragedy that inspired the film, the influence of 70s cinema and the huge importance of film festivals.

RUN HIDE FIGHT was inspired by a tragic incident in your own past so did that make it a harder script to write?

In 1999, my best friend and fellow filmmaker, Shayne Worcester, was gunned down during a mugging in San Francisco. It came to light years later that the event was a gang initiation — meaning guys who wanted to be part of a gang were tasked with going out and killing a random civilian that night. He was only 29.

An Impossible Project UK Trailer

Digital has taken over our lives, from the constant buzz of phone notifications to social-media stories that disappear forever and millions of photos stored on our devices rather than taking pride of place on the mantelpiece. We have apps for everything, from fitness to baking and even for sleeping. We're reading e-books, streaming, sharing, posting – this is our reality. It's time for a reset.

An inspiring new feature documentary AN IMPOSSIBLE PROJECT that celebrates all things analogue is an antidote to digital. It is based on the first-hand testimony of people from all walks of life; from Number 10 Downing Street, the Department of Health, The Scientific Advisory Group for Emergencies (SAGE), and from hospitals and care homes across the country.

For the first time ever, a group of celebrities move into the most famous apartment block in the UK. Expect twists and turns as these VIPs compete to be crowned The Circle's most popular celebrity player. While some of the celebrities are playing as themselves in the game, others are catfishing as another celebrity identity altogether, hoping to convince the other players that they are the real deal.

Who are each of the celebrities playing as in the game in their mission to be crowned most popular?

Going into The Celebrity Circle as themselves:
Denise van Outen
Duncan James

and Charlotte Crosby will join the game as a new player, playing as Peter Andre

This edition of the game will see suspicions heightened and gameplaying galore as the celebs compete for the title of most popular player. The series was filmed in autumn last year, with the celebrities having no idea who was catfishing and who was keeping it real.

Emma Willis returns as host, delivering the players some surprise alerts along the way, and comedian Sophie Willan resumes her role as the unmistakable voiceover of each episode.

Fans of the show won't have long to wait for even more action from The Circle. The six-part celebrity series will be followed immediately by the all-new third series of The Circle.
